W. Edward Bureau, PhD

Dr. Ed Bureau began serving students, colleagues, and programs of the School of Education in 2006 as an Associate Clinical Professor. Teaching courses in the EdD program, Dr.Bureau focuses on developing the leadership of individuals and the capacities for sustainable change in organizations.

Dr. Bureau enjoys leading Drexel's EdD in Educational Leadership and Management. Active in shepherding the program through approval by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Dr. Bureau now serves as Executive Director of EdD Programs and as Director of the Sacramento EdD. His efforts are now focused on all aspects of program implementation to insure successful experiences for the students, staff, School, College, and University.

With a colleague Dr. Bureau created the foundation for a program of educational policy studies at the Goodwin College. Courses and activities focus on policy making within the contexts of national, state, and local education and within legislative processes. Frames of mind shaping his policy work are those of systemic change, futures studies, 21st Century learning, and educational philosophy.

To spread the Drexel name and SOE's programs across Pennsylvania, Dr. Bureau continues with colleagues to build and implement a working relationship with a major professional organization. He served on a six-university team to create models for infusing the Pennsylvania Inspired Leadership standards into graduate programs. Recently, he served as a member of a team that revised program guidelines used by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to approve graduate programs granting professional certifications to school and district administrators. His efforts at coalition building now are concentrated in California.

Before coming to Drexel, Dr. Bureau served in a variety of teaching and leadership capacities in school districts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. His career of thirty-five years included service as a: teacher, assistant superintendent, director of instruction, supervisor of professional development and school reform, supervisor of language arts and reading. Dr. Bureau taught at Widener University and Penn State University prior to coming to Drexel. At the state level, Dr. Bureau has served as president of the Pennsylvania Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and chair of key committees.

Current research efforts focus on the learning processes and impact of transcontinental, live interactive sessions between EdD cohort members on the east and west coasts. Within the realm of the EdD, he researches the impact of "high touch" recruiting strategies. As the EdD program is brought up to full implementation, Dr. Bureau is researching the strategic leadership phenomenon involved. Over the years, Dr. Bureau has published articles and given numerous presentations on a variety of topics related to leadership, supervision, and capacity development.

Dr. Bureau holds a B.A. in English from Dickinson College, a M.Ed. in Curriculum from Temple University, and a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania.
